MERCY WORKS

In Australia, the Sisters of Mercy are applying Catherine McAuley's vision of mercy to our everyday life. In giving direction to their mission today they stated:

  • We are committed to those most vulnerable in our society such as Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, youth, the economically poor, people in rural areas, women, migrants and refugees.

  • We are prepared to break boundaries for the sake of mission to the disadvantaged.

  • We affirm the enrichment we receive from our ministries at home and in Asia, the Pacific, South America and Africa.

  • We deplore the way violence in our society is tamed, making it an acceptable way of human interaction.

  • We mourn the ravaging of the earth and the consequent poverty and dispossession of people. An active ministry to the earth is integral to our Mercy spirituality.

This commitment has been put into the organisation of MERCY WORKS INCORPORATED.

ACFID LogoMercy Works Inc is a member of the Australian Council for International Development and is a proud signatory of the Code of Conduct.

MERCY WORKS is the organisational way that the Sisters of Mercy in Australia show support for relief and development work both in Australia and overseas.

MERCY WORKS seeks to identify the human rights situation of people who are poor and displaced and who are denied access to basic resources such as education, health care and social well-being. Mercy Works builds on the Mercy heritage and traditions to make a positive difference where basic rights are being denied, limited or infringed. Through partner groups working at the local level, Mercy Works listens to local people and communities and works with partners to bring about change for the realisation of human rights and the common good.

MERCY WORKS members and supporters include Sisters of Mercy, adults and young people who are inspired by the values of Catherine McAuley.

MERCY WORKS programs focus on the rights and situations of refugees and, in particular, women and girls.

MERCY WORKS:

  • Pakistan and Papua New Guinea

  • Mercy Refugee Service workers on the Thai-Burma border, PNG, and the Sudan-Uganda border

  • Mercy Refugee Service Community Links volunteers with refugees in Australia

  • Activities with Indigenous Australians

MERCY WORKS is an organisation that strives for good practice with transparency and accountability in its affairs.
