PROGRAMS OVERVIEW

MERCY REFUGEE SERVICE

  • Actively supports self-determination and human rights for refugees and asylum seekers overseas and in Australia.
  • Provides education, training, social counselling, pastoral care. Field workers are present in South East Asia and Africa.
  • Activities in Australia include volunteer settlement programs for both newly arriving refugees and those needing ongoing support and links within the community.
  • We provide outreach to asylum seekers. We work closely with local church groups and other organisations.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA

  • Sisters of Mercy engage in partnerships with women developing skills in counselling, education and management, health and pastoral services.
  • Programs seek to prevent injustice and oppression against women and promote non-violence.
  • Programs provide health, primary and secondary education and pastoral care.

PAKISTAN

  • Sisters provide education in a range of settings including formal and non-formal, Urdu and English medium schools, teacher training and professional development, basic literacy and publication of basic texts.
  • Sisters initiate new responses to community needs through pastoral work, counselling, and the support and training of local people in these areas.
  • Programs facilitate community leadership, especially with women.
  • Sisters encourage and support the emergence of a local Mercy congregation.

INDIGENOUS

The Sisters of Mercy have pledged themselves to continue to support wholeheartedly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in their struggle for justice.

SCHOOL SUPPORT SCHEME

Mercy Works Inc invites schools to partner with MWI and support projects. MWI has prepared a School Support Scheme kit that assists schools with information on the ethos and purpose of MWI. A regular newsletter to schools updates schools on MWI projects.

EAST TIMOR

The Sisters of Mercy have supported the people of East Timor in many and varied ways over many years. In recent years Sisters of Mercy have lived and worked in East Timor.
