An international conference held from the 6th - 9th December 2001 at the University of New South Wales

The Centre for Refugee Research hosted an international conference to mark the 50th anniversary of the Refugee Convention. A conference organising committee comprising academics from several faculties in the university, UNHCR, the Refugee Council of Australia, ANCORW, academics from other universities and community groups organised a multimedia event.

The aim of this conference was to stimulate vigorous debate between major players in the Refugee Arena and to exchange experience, knowledge and ideas in order to produce a set of sound recommendations to Government and to UNHCR.

The workshops focused on three major themes; each theme examining the 1951 Convention in terms of currently agreed definitions, their interpretation, gaps and future recommendations. The three themes are those of:

  1. Resettlement in Developed countries
  2. The concept of Asylum and the treatment of Asylum Seekers
  3. Protection of refugees and Internally Displaced Peoples (IDPs) in camps, and during repatriation or settlement in developing countries
