WORKING WITH REFUGEES IN AUSTRALIA

In Australia, Mercy Refugee Service assists in the resettlement of refugees from many places across the world. Through the Community Links Project, MRS recruits, trains and supports ordinary Australians to extend a welcoming hand to refugees settling in Australia.

Once trained, volunteers offer friendship and guidance to refugee families and individuals as they settle into Australia. They provide refugee families with practical assistance that is aimed at developing the family's own skills to operate confidently and independently in their new community and build their own linkages as needs arise. For more information about this project, including how to become a volunteer, see the Volunteers section of our website.

Beyond the direct work of Mercy Refugee Service, the Sisters of Mercy in Australia also provide pastoral and practical support to asylum seekers who are in detention and those on temporary protection or bridging visas who are living in the Australian community. Sisters of Mercy are present in every state in Australia, working with those refugees and asylum seekers in their local community.

Mercy Refugee Service also works with like-minded organisations to advocate on behalf of asylum seekers and refugees and share information about refugee issues with the broader Australian community.
