In 1956, Australian Sisters of Mercy made their first overseas foundation to Papua New Guinea. The first group of Mercy Sisters came to Goroka to be followed by many others to different parts of the country. Today we are a small group of 29 women, in eleven locations. This group is made up of 29 sisters, nine expatriate sisters, eleven finally vowed Papua New Guinean sisters, eight temporary professed sisters and one postulant.

In the year 2002 during our Assembly, suggestions and proposals were made. Out of all of these we came up with four specific mandates which we felt needed urgent and immediate attention and focus:
Prison and Settlement project - Goroka: Theresia Boyek
Mercy Education program - Wewak: Kaye Bolwell
Mercy Works has also supported the HIV/AIDS, Counselling and Care work of Maura O'Shaughnessy
