BASTI (SLUM) SCHOOL RENOVATION PROJECT, KARACHI

Mercy Education Service began in 1998 for the development of education through the schooling of children and basic health services amongst shelterless, bonded haris who migrated to Karachi from the tribal areas of Interior Sindh. It aims to provide for an intellectually sound educative and free environment for children from various casts, creeds and cultures. It has established two schools (one morning and one afternoon shift) at two different sites within the busti (slum) which is located around a polluted, open drain where the houses are constructed from branches and rags. At the same time, Mercy Education Service aims to educate women of the families in basic health care and hygiene and to give them access to immunization for their children.
