EARTHQUAKE APPEAL

The earthquake in Pakistan has certainly had a devastating affect on many people here. People who are not personally affected are working very hard to alleviate the incredible hardship that thousands have suffered. We Sisters of Mercy Pakistan are very grateful to Mercy Sisters throughout the world for responding so generously towards the MWI earthquake appeal.

We have looked at most appropriate ways to respond to the various needs and to the response of different organizations. Caritas Pakistan is doing excellent relief work and is providing assistance to some of the most deprived people in very remote areas. Some countries have sent Caritas teams who are working along side workers from Caritas Pakistan and together they are providing and delivering relief services such as providing over 5000 tents and many blankets and providing medical assistance particularly in the area of vaccination against tetanus and vitamin A injections. They have also identified the needs for some basic equipment and consumable that are immediately needed by families. Kits are being assembled for the affectees.

We wish to work in partnership with Caritas Pakistan in providing kits for 5000 families. These Kits will meet Sphere standards and take account of local needs. The kits will contain the following basic items:

A tin trunk, quilt, water cans, buckets, cooking pots and utensils, plates cups etc. women's underwear, trowel and dustpan [necessary for toilet/hygiene needs], toothpaste/brushes, soap for washing clothes and personal soap. These consumable items will be sufficient for a family of 7 people for two months.

The cost of each kit is Aus $ 100.

Peoples are dependant on most of these items for their very survival. We request MWI to forward to us the Sister of Mercy Pakistan the amount of Aus $ 36,000 so that we can begin this work in partnership with Caritas Pakistan.
