Australia Day: Walking Together Towards Closing the Gap

Cassandra Gibbs, Mercy Works’ Indigenous Projects Co-ordinator (centre), with women from Baabayn Aboriginal Corporation. Mercy Works partners with Baabayn to support a weekly Mums and Bubs program for Aboriginal families.
Today, as we celebrate the beauty and diversity of our nation, we also acknowledge that for many First Nations peoples this day carries deep pain and is a reminder of the gap that still exists.
The Australian Government’s Closing the Gap initiative is an important step forward. But meaningful change requires all of us. At Mercy Works, we believe reconciliation is not just a policy — it is a shared responsibility.
Through our Indigenous programs, and with the generous support of our partners and donors, Mercy Works works alongside communities to create opportunities. Our projects focus on improving health outcomes, strengthening education, supporting employment and justice, and empowering communities to shape their own futures.
Together, we can help ensure every Australian has the opportunity to thrive.
This Australia Day, we invite our community to reflect with hope, empathy and a commitment to action — because closing the gap is not only a government goal, but a national responsibility we all share.
Join us as we continue walking together towards a more just and inclusive Australia.
